Rural young people and the law: Online forum launched

30 March 2006

Rural Young People and the Law - A National Online Forum was launched on 30 March 2006 by The Hon Warren Truss, Minister for Transport and Regional Services, at Parliament House, Canberra.

Drawing on the expertise of lawyers from around Australia specialising in youth law issues, the online forum will invite young people living in rural Australia to ask questions and share their experiences of our laws and legal system.

The forum is hosted by the National Children's and Youth Law Centre and Rural Law Online and will run for a minimum of four weeks. The website also includes a free information package on areas of the law affecting young people.

At its conclusion, a report will be compiled to highlight issues that arise from the forum. Rural Law Online web manager, Richard Coverdale, said the forum provided a voice for young rural Australians.

The forum has been established to find out from young people living in rural Australia whether they think they are getting a fair deal under the Australian justice system."

The Rural Law Online website (incorporating the forum) is an initiative of the Victoria Law Foundation and is designed and hosted by CECC. Rural Law Online is currently the number one site for 'rural law' topics on Google.
