CeCC presents CeBIT Australia workshop: Spatial Representation and Visualisation of Big Data
On May 29 CeCC presented a Business Intelligence and Big Data workshop at the 2013 CeBIT Australia Conference.
CeCC’s Helen Thompson (Director), Andrew MacLeod (Technical Manager, Projects), and Paul Feely (Senior Programmer) jointly conducted a 3-hour workshop entitled Spatial Representation and Visualisation of Big Data.
Workshop participants included local government, universities, private and public sector organisations and involved an expertise ranging from project managers to spatial developers.
Helen Thompson provided case studies from various CeCC partners detailing reasons for spatially enabling datasets and potential issues.
Andrew Macleod demonstrated Visualising Victoria's Groundwater to illustrate how VVG provides and consumes data.
Paul Feely demonstrated how to create a thematic map from a raw dataset with the technical details of how Sport and Recreation Spatial was developed.
Workshop topics included:
- The value of interoperable data and web based spatial technologies
- Using spatial representations for decision making
- Consuming interoperable data
- Cloud based services for big data: Examples of its use and how workshop participants can adopt in their own workplaces
- Common issues associated with data use and provision (organisational constraints; privacy; legal issues etc.)
- Limitations of big data
