2008 Alfred Deakin Lecture Series Launched in Ballarat

5 July 2008

The Alfred Deakin 2008 Lecture program ran throughout June 2008 with activities in Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne and Albury. The 2008 lecture program "From DNA to Deep Space" coverd topics ranging from innovation to the human body.

Three events were held in Ballarat - a Business Seminar, an open public lecture and a cocktail party. CeCC played a lead role in the organisation of each of these events.  With support from UoB's Marketing and Public Relations Team, CeCC arranged activities such as a tour of UoB facilities for the event management company, engaged individuals to undertake official welcomes, assisted by involving local speakers and participants and distributed invites and marketing material.

All events were successful. Approximately 25 people participated in the Business Seminar which provided an opportunity for close interaction with the guest speakers of the inaugural Ballarat Lecture. More than 150 people attended the public lecture in the evening.

The Geography of Hope Public Lecture which was held at the Founders Theatre, University of Ballarat saw award-winning Canadian journalist and author Chris Turner taking participants on a tour of 'the world we need', looking at how small scale, innovative projects can successfully meet environmental challenges. Dr Brian Walker (CSIRO), Professor Peter Gell (University of Ballarat) and Ann Shaw Rungie (Water Consultant) also joined the conversation.
